A life course approach to early detection and prevention of noncommunicable diseases in priority populations
A new model of care in primary health care settings for socially disadvantaged communities, targeting the detection and prevention of noncommunicable diseases in (pre)pregnancy, childhood, and young adulthood.
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide. The high burden of NCDs disproportionally affects marginalised populations such as First Nations peoples in colonised jurisdictions, and populations resident in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. To address rising incidences of NCDs, particularly in younger people, and the associated complex morbidities and premature death, the AIMS of the Investigator grant are to implement a program of research focused on the life course in two distinct populations: First Nations peoples in Australia and Nepal. Fundamental to this program is implementation and translation of 5-major studies within primary health care services, where I have established partnerships.
These studies will employ both a life course and implementation science frameworks and capitalises on previous research focused on life course studies. This Investigator Grant will enable this vision by supporting:
- A program of high quality, community led, priority driven, solution focused research on NCDs across the life course.
- Research translation that can transform clinical practice and policy evidence in priority populations.
- Capacity and capabilities inter/nationally to improve NCD outcomes in priority populations by training and mentoring future research leaders, health practitioners and community leaders.
- Enhanced leadership and advocacy among First Nations Australian and Nepalese peoples through strong collaborations with government and non-government agencies in both countries.
The early life focus will reduce the risk of premature death from NCDs, contributing to Australia’s Closing the Gap 2030 targets of equitable life expectancies throughout Australia. This Investigator Grant will allow me to position Australia at the centre of global initiatives to deliver community-led and accepted outcomes for populations facing greatest inequity.
