About the Speaker

Roslyn is a Kalkatungu/Kalkadoon woman from Mount Isa, North-West Queensland and has Gangalidda, Garawa connections across Burketown in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. She is a teacher, leader, nurturer, and carer of children, families, and community.

Roslyn joined the Let’s Yarn About Sleep program as a Senior Project Coordinator in 2021. She brings a wealth of experience to the program with more than 30 years combined in Early Childhood Education, Aboriginal Community Services Sector, and Social Services across Australia. Ros was the first Aboriginal woman Employed as a Manager at the Queensland Council of Social Services, where she led the Indigenous Professional Support Unit team to implement their initiatives across 76 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Communities in Queensland.

Abstract

In this seminar, Roslyn will share her wealth of experience and expertise in fostering meaningful and impactful community engagement within First Nations communities. Guided by the principles of respect, reciprocity, self-determination, and sustainability, Roslyn has successfully orchestrated numerous projects that amplify the voices of her community members and encourage their active participation in decision-making processes and facilitate community ownership of research.

The seminar will delve into the fundamental aspects of culturally responsive and effective community engagement, emphasizing the significance of building trust, forging genuine relationships, and understanding a diverse range of cultural protocols. Drawing on her experiences during the LYAS Pilot Project in Mount Isa, Roslyn will illustrate the challenges and triumphs faced while bridging the gap between community members and researchers.
