About the opportunity

The Poche Centre for Indigenous Health at The University of Queensland is offering data science training and internships to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders at a variety of skill levels. Our program will support successful applicants to undertake short-course external training, focused on mutual interests, and an internstyle placement within the ATLAS Indigenous Primary Care Surveillance Network team. This will allow you to develop data science skills while working with realworld datasets. Data is sourced from Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) as part of the ongoing national ATLAS surveillance network.

Examples of the kinds of training the ATLAS Indigenous Data Scientist capacity strengthening program would consider supporting include:

  • Data literacy and analysis
  • Data management
  • Web design
  • Programming in R
  • Programming in Python
  • Statistics and machine learning
  • Natural language processing
  • Data engineering

  • Online open courses
  • Commercial provider bootcamps
  • University programs (e.g. graduate certificate)

Supported by in-house training and work placement.

About you

  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  • A keen interest in developing skills as a data scientist
  • Capacity to undertake study/training on a part-time basis
  • Capacity to undertake a (paid) work placement on a part-time basis
